Ipe is very one of the most utilized hardwoods in the Caribbean often used for exterior projects, especially near the ocean. Hardwood, especially ipe wood is ideal for exteriors because it resist both sun exposure as well as heavy rainfall. It is virtually resistant to fungus, termites, mold, mildew, and other insects. Aside from being resistant to the elements, hardwood is a beautiful and natural choice for exteriors. Ipe, as well as cumaru, massaranduba, jatoba, garapa, and other hardwoods, have a variety of beautiful colors and will become a gorgeous silver patina if left un oiled. Ipe as well as cumaru and other hardwoods have an A1 fire rating, which is the same as steel and concrete. You can see why Bahamian hotels such as the Atlantis, the Ocean Club, SLS Baha Mar, and The Cove on the island of Eleuthera chose hardwoods for the safety of their guests. If you are looking for a particular color deck, Brazilian Lumber will advise on the perfect wood species. Ipe wood has a brown coloring, cumaru a reddish tone, garapa a golden color, and tigerwood has beautiful, stripped tones of caramel and ebony. All hardwood must be sealed and oiled periodically in order to maintain the original color; however, many Bahamian hotels chose to let the ipe go to a silver platinum color.

Dimensions for the Bahamas:
Tropical Hardwoods are the number one builder’s choice for the Bahamas because of the weather conditions and climate. Tropical hardwoods, especially ipe are known for being ideal around sea water and sunlight, which the Bahamas have plenty of. Ipe and other hardwoods are extremely dense, which means they are quasi-impermeable to mildew, mold, termites, splintering, cracking or warping. Ipe has a lifespan of around 35 years without maintenance, even under the Bahamas’s weather conditions.
Brazilian Lumber offers hardwoods in a large variety of species. We are proud to offer more species than most lumber yards, and with our warehouse’s proximity to the port, our shipping are very convenient. Though our hardwoods are all A-grade, please keep in mind that hardwood is a natural product so some color variations and some character can be expected from board to board.hardwood specific oils, and artificial grass, turf and ivy.
In the Bahamas we know Sustainability is Important
The Bahamas is known as an eco-friendly destination and building standards and homeowner’s choices in building materials reflect that. This is why Brazilian Lumber offers responsibly harvested hardwoods for our customers including certified lumber. Customers can rest assured that all the proper protocols and standards are met and that the communities where the wood is produced benefit economically.
All the hardwood that is chosen is done so under the strict supervision of IBAMA’s (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources which in Portuguese is Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis) which requires harvesting companies to meet very strict standards. This means that all governmental fees and taxes are covered including the fees for forestry exploring social tributes, goods taxation, and environmental and labor duties and tributes. In addition to these legal proceedings, all hardwood sourced must be approved by the Sustainable Forest Management Plan (Plano de Manejo Florestal Sustentável – PMFS), it must have an Annual Operational Plan (Plano Operacional Anual – POA) and an Operating Authorization (Autorização de Exploração – AUTEX). By following these processes, we can guarantee accountability and legality of our products.
The trees that are selected for milling are certified as dead by a forestry manager. By removing such trees, sunlight can penetrate to the lower parts of the forest, allowing more saplings to grow. All our wood is LACEY Act compliant, and we can provide all certificates required. Hardwood is a very green option as no chemicals are used to produce it or pesticides used to coat it. It is biodegradable and renewable. Choosing Brazilian Lumber’s hardwood means making a green choice. As a natural product, wood decomposes once it is no longer in use instead of filling landfills.
