PVC decking is a deck board made entirely from polyvinyl chloride, with no wood fibre in the mix. That is the whole difference: with no organic content there is nothing in the board for mould to feed on and nothing to absorb water. It is the lightest and the most stain-resistant of the synthetic decking materials, and the most expensive.
The technical name for it is cellular PVC, because the material is foamed during extrusion to give it the weight and the workability of timber. It cuts, drills and fastens with ordinary carpentry tools.

Six reasons contractors choose PVC over composite
- No wood, no mouldComposite boards carry wood flour in the core. PVC carries none, so there is nothing for mould to feed on.
- The lightest board on the truckAround 30% lighter than a comparable composite board, which matters on a large deck and on upper floors.

Choosing between them
PVC or composite?

Put plainly: composite is the better value and PVC is the better material. If the deck is by salt water, around a pool, or somewhere it will not be washed often, the premium earns itself back. Otherwise composite does the job.
A question we get constantly
Is Trex PVC?
No. Trex is a wood-plastic composite, not PVC. The core is reclaimed wood fibre mixed with recycled polyethylene, wrapped in a protective shell. There is wood in a Trex board, which is exactly what there is not in a PVC board.
The confusion is understandable, because the two get shelved together as "synthetic decking" and both are sold as no-maintenance. They are different materials with different reasons to buy them.

Frequently asked questions about PVC decking
What is PVC decking made of?
Polyvinyl chloride and nothing else. Unlike composite decking there is no wood fibre in the core. The material is foamed during extrusion, which is why the industry calls it cellular PVC.
Is PVC decking better than composite?
It is the better material and composite is the better value. PVC is lighter, more stain resistant and has no organic content for mould to feed on. Composite costs roughly half as much per foot. Near salt water or a pool the premium is usually worth it.
How much does PVC decking cost?
Our AZEK boards run from $5.99 to $7.79 per foot depending on the collection. Boards are priced per foot and come in 12, 16 and 20 foot lengths, so a 16 foot Harvest board is 16 x $5.99.
Does PVC decking get hot in the sun?
Surface temperature is driven mainly by colour, not by material. A light PVC board and a light composite board run close to each other. If barefoot comfort matters, choose a lighter colour first and worry about the material second.
What sizes does PVC decking come in?
We stock 1x6, which is what almost every PVC deck is built from. 1x8 and 2x6 we bring in to order. Lengths are 12, 16 and 20 feet.
Is Trex PVC decking?
No. Trex makes a wood-plastic composite, not PVC. If you want a board with no wood in it, look at AZEK or Zuri. If you want Trex, we stock all four of its collections on our Trex page.
Can I see a sample before I buy?
Ask at our Miami warehouse. Leaving a sample outside on your own site for a week tells you more than any brochure.
