IPE

Ipe Lumber Technical Information

Ipe Lumber (pronounced ee-pay) is one of the densest hardwoods available for outdoor construction. It is very dense (in fact, it sinks in water) and is mildew and decay-resistant.

It’s denseness and natural oils make it virtually impenetrable to insects (so insect deterioration is not an issue). Ipe does not scratch or splinter easily, does not become hot in the sun, and has a high friction coefficient, making it perfect for outdoor and seaside construction.

Other Names: Brazilian Walnut, Lapacho, Iron Wood, Amapa, Cortez, Guayacan polvillo, Flor Amarillo, Greenheart, Madera negra, Tahuari, Lapacho negro, Pau D arco, Canaguate, Polvillo, Hakia, Tahuari Negro, Groenhart, Acapro Puy, Yellow poui.

Ipe Origin: Central and South America (Brazil, Peru, Paraguay, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Venezuela).

Appearance: The color of Ipe is similar to a walnut, with dark tones that have olive brown to reddish undertones. If left untreated, it will
gradually turn into a beautiful natural silver patina.

Tree Size: 100-130 ft (30-40 m) tall, 2-4 ft (.6-1.2 m) trunk diameter

Average Dried Weight: 69 lbs/ft3 (1,100 kg/m3)

Drying: Ipe can be air-dried or kiln-dried. Air-dried Ipe has a moisture content of around 18%, whereas kiln-dried Ipe has a moisture
content of about 10-13%. Either air-dried or kiln-dried Ipe resists heat, rain, wind, and temperature swings.

Workability: Due to its high density and strength, Ipe can be difficult to work with if one does not pre-drill it. This tropical hardwood
should be screwed together and not glued or nailed.

Maintenance: Ipe Lumber does not scratch or splinter easily, which means that it will maintain the structure’s integrity for over 25
years. However, to preserve the original color of Ipe, it will have to be oiled at least once per year, depending on the climate and sun
exposure. If Ipe is not sanded or oiled, it will turn gray, often referred to as a silver patina.

Preservation: Ipe Lumber does not require special treatment, as it will last for over 40 years without maintenance. However, the
hardwood naturally weathers to a beautiful silver-gray patina. A deck oil with UV inhibitors or sealers is an excellent option to maintain
this rich tone.

Sustainable: The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) does not list Ipe in its
appendices.The Forest Legality Initiative states that Ipe can be exported and traded internationally. The International Union for
Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN) does not list Ipe as an endangered species. Brazilian Lumber, LLC meets
high standards for social, economic, and environmental responsibility. We monitor and document the chain of custody of all our

CUMARU

Cumaru Lumber Technical Information

Cumaru Lumber (pronounced Ku-mah-rue) also known as Brazilian Teak is one of the densest hardwoods available for outdoor construction, second only to Ipe. It is very dense, which is why it is ideal for exterior use, as it is mildew and decay-resistant. It is often used for decking, flooring, railroad ties, as well as other purposes.

Cumaru does not scratch or splinter easily, does not become hot in the sun, and has a high friction coefficient, making it perfect for outdoor and seaside construction.

Species: Dipteryx odorata

Other Names: Almendrillo, Amburana, Brazilian Teak, Cumaru Rosa, Imburana de Cheiro, Tonka, Tonka Bean, Tonquin Bean cumaru decking for building, kumaru, Gaiac de Cayenne, Amendrillo, ebo, Shihuahuaco Amarillo, Charapilla, Sarrapia.

Cumaru Origin: Central and South America (Brazil, Colombia,Peru, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Venezuela).

Appearance: Cumaru hardwood is a deep reddish brown color with a tight, even grain. Over time, the red cumaru color will slightly fade to a light brown. The species has an irregular, slightly interlocked grain and is coarse and wavy in texture.

Tree Size: 130-160 ft (40-50 m) tall, 3-5 ft (1-1.5 m) trunk diameter.

Average Dried Weight: 68 lbs/ft3 (1,085 kg/m3)

Specific Gravity: (Basic, 12% MC): .86, 1.09

Drying: Cumaru lumber is very unstable when used in dry climates, and it is prone to shrinkage. It is naturally seasoned and kiln-dried to prevent shrinkage.

Workability: Cumaru decking is difficult to saw and bore and has a high blunting effect on tools. Cumaru cannot be glued because of its high density and oily nature. Instead, it should be nailed, and screws should be used well after pre-boring the boards. The dust arising from working Cumaru wood flooring has been known to cause a slight allergic reaction in contact with the skin for some people, and as such, some care should be taken in installing and preparing this product.

Preservation: Cumaru hardwood naturally weathers to a beautiful silver-gray patina. To maintain this rich tone, a deck oil with UV inhibitors or sealers are a good option.

Garapa Lumber Technical Information

This tropical hardwood is one of the best woods for decking. You can use Garapa lumber for nearly any sort of outdoor woodworking project due to its sturdiness and resistance to extreme weather conditions. In terms of workability, Garapa is quite bendy, no matter its excessive density. Also, this lumber is proof against water, decay, and mold. It is widely used for patios and lawn decking.

JATOBA

Jatoba Lumber Technical Information

Jatoba Lumber is widely used for exterior carpentry thanks to its durability. Commonly referred to as Brazilian Cherry due to its similarity in color to domestic cherry, Jatoba is an incredibly strong wood. Aside from exterior use, Jatoba can also be installed as interior flooring, especially in high-foot traffic areas where a high coefficient of friction is desired.

Species: Hymenaea courbaril

Other Names: Jatoba, Brazilian Cherry, Jatobá

Jatoba Origin: Central America, southern Mexico, northern South America, and the West Indies.

Appearance: Jatoba’s coloring is on the lighter side of brown, with reddish tones.

Tree Size: 100-130 ft (30-40 m) tall, 2-4 ft (.6-1.2 m) trunk diameter.

Workability: Jatoba lumber is a very dense hardwood, so tool blunting can be expected. The interlocking grain makes it difficult to plane Jatoba. However, it glues, stains, and turns well.

Maintenance: Like most hardwoods, Jatoba can be air-dried or kiln-dried.

Preservation: To maintain Jatoba’s coloring, it is important to apply a UV-blocking sealer if Jatoba is installed outdoors.
