Decking accessories are everything you need to build and keep a deck other than the boards themselves: the fasteners that hold it down, the tape that protects the frame underneath, the plugs that hide the screw heads, and the oils and cleaners that stop it going grey. On a hardwood deck the accessories are usually what decides how long it lasts.
Most of what is on this page is the part of the job that gets bought last and thought about least. It is also the part where the wrong choice is most expensive: a screw that corrodes in salt air, a fastener that will not hold a dense hardwood, an oil that greys out in a season.
Getting it right
Six things worth knowing before you order
- Hardwood needs pre-drillingIpe and Cumaru are dense enough to snap a screw. Pre-drill and countersink, or use a hidden clip that fits a slot cut in the edge.
- Stainless near salt airCoated steel is fine inland. Within a few miles of the coast, stainless is the difference between a deck that lasts and one that bleeds rust down the boards.
- Hidden or face-screwed, decide firstHidden clips give a clean surface. Face screws with plugs are faster and easier to lift for repairs. It changes what you order.
- Tape the joistsThe frame rots before the boards do. Joist tape costs little and is the cheapest year you will ever buy.
- Composite does not take oilOils and sealers on this page are for hardwood. A capped composite board needs cleaning, not finishing.
- Cleaning is two stepsCleaner strips the grey, brightener restores the tone. One without the other leaves the deck looking washed out.

Which fastener goes with which board
This is the one thing a supplier can answer that a search result usually cannot, because it depends on what you are actually fastening.

Frequently asked questions about decking accessories
What is the best glue for composite decking?
For most composite repairs a polyurethane construction adhesive works, which is why we stock Gorilla Glue. It expands as it cures and grips a surface that screws tend to mushroom. It is not a substitute for fastening a board down, only for the trim, the fascia and the small pieces that have nowhere to take a screw.
What is the best oil for an Ipe deck?
The two we sell most of are Ipe Oil and Penofin. Ipe Oil is made for dense tropical hardwood and holds the colour longer on a south-facing deck. Penofin penetrates deeper and is easier to reapply. Both need reapplying every year or two in Florida sun. Neither is a sealer.
What is the difference between a deck cleaner and a brightener?
The cleaner strips the grey oxidised layer and the dirt. The brightener neutralises the cleaner and brings the wood tone back. They are sold as part one and part two because using the first without the second leaves the deck pale.
Do I need to pre-drill Ipe?
Yes. Ipe is dense enough to snap a screw or strip the head. Pre-drill and countersink, then plug the hole, or use a hidden clip that sits in a slot cut into the edge of the board.
How many hidden fasteners do I need?
Roughly one clip per joist per board, so it comes down to your joist spacing and your square footage. Our contractor buckets come in 175, 525 and 1050 counts. Send us the square footage and we will do the maths.
Should I use stainless steel screws?
Near salt water, yes. Coated steel is fine inland but within a few miles of the coast it corrodes and bleeds rust stains down the face of the boards. Stainless costs more once and saves the deck.
Do I need joist tape?
It is the cheapest insurance on a deck. Water sits where the board meets the joist, and that is where the frame starts to go. A roll of joist flashing tape costs a fraction of replacing a beam.
